19-year-old singer-songwriter Kara Marni has been infatuated with music for as long as she can remember. Her musical prowess was first realised by her grandmother before she’d even uttered her first word. “I’d always cry the longest out of my siblings and my mom would say ‘why is she still crying?’ My grandmother would always say ‘she’s not crying, she’s singing.’”

With her adolescent years being soundtracked by classic soul artists that were championed by her parents, it was on the school run while hearing her mum playing Minnie Riperton’s Loving You that her interest in music was fully realised. That evening, she asked her mum to buy her the CD. From that moment on Marni spent hours listening to the track on her pink fuchsia CD player, hoping one day to mimic the iconic whistle register with which Riperton is synonymous with.
